Packers Set To Sign USFL Star After Workout With Team

There has been a lot of discussion about the quarterback position for the Green Bay Packers this offseason. The biggest topic of discussion has been Jordan Love, who is taking over as the starting quarterback after Aaron Rodgers was traded to the New York Jets.

How he responds to being a starter for the first time in the NFL is something a lot of people will be keeping an eye on. But, he isn’t the only storyline under center for the Packers. Their depth, or lack thereof, has also been a topic of discussion.

Love has only 83 career pass attempts in the regular season under his belt and his current backups have even less. 2023 fifth-round pick Sean Clifford and 2019 seventh-round pick Danny Etling are battling it out for the backup quarterback job and neither of them have an NFL regular season pass on their record.

Signing a quarterback is one of the things many people think the Packers should do. They heard and listened, but it wasn’t a signing anyone saw coming. While Teddy Bridgewater has been connected to Green Bay, they opted to go in a different direction.

The Packers held a workout for USFL MVP Alex McGough earlier this week and he must have impressed. According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC, the team is going to be signing him to the 90-man roster.

With training camp beginning next week, that signing is a big deal as he could have a chance to play himself onto the roster, or at the very least, a taxi squad spot. If anything were to happen to Love that would force him to miss time, the Packers would be doomed as Clifford and Etling wouldn’t instill much confidence running an offense.

While McGouch doesn’t have any NFL regular season experience either, he at least has some game action under his belt from the USFL this year. He led Birmingham to a second straight USFL title, throwing for 2,104 yards and 20 touchdowns.

While the McGough signing shouldn’t keep the Packers from adding a quarterback with NFL experience, it does show that they are willing to shake things up. McGough should put some pressure on Etling at the very least as it would be hard to imagine the Packers giving up on a fifth-round draft pick only months after selecting him.
