One of the strengths of the Green Bay Packers heading into the 2023 season is their offensive line. The team has a great mix of talented veterans and young players, which has resulted in the team having a unit ranked in the top 10 of the NFL.
One of the reasons that the Packers’ offensive line is so highly regarded is the presence of Elgton Jenkins. Jenkins has lined up all over the offensive line, stepping into the lineup whenever an injury has arisen.
2022 was the second Pro Bowl year for Jenkins, who has played at a high level regardless of where he has been needed to play. His performance last season was even more impressive as it came on the heels of an injury-shortened 2021 because of a torn ACL. He needed a little while to settle back into the lineup but eventually found his groove.
Heading into 2023, Jenkins is expecting big things. Not only is he another year removed from his ACL injury, but he is also returning to his natural position of left guard full-time.
“It’s going to be fun, being able to have a whole season, a whole camp just working at one position and perfecting my craft,” Jenkins said following a recent OTA practice. “I’m expecting big things from myself and I know my coach and everyone else is. So it’s just up from here.”
36 out of 53 of Jenkins’ starts with the Packers have come at left guard. But he has also filled in left tackle, right tackle and center, providing the team with elite versatility.
Jenkins has quickly taken over a mentor role with the Packers, as 2022 fourth-round pick Zach Tom has been taken under his wing. A big reason that Jenkins is able to stick at left guard is that Tom has showcased some of the same versatile skills that Jenkins has.
“All the young guys call me ‘OG’ and all that,” Jenkins said, smiling. “Four years ago, I was a younger guy, but I’ve crossed over.”
Projected to start alongside veteran left tackle David Bakhtiari, the duo has major goals for the 2023 season. They have discussed becoming the best left side in the NFL, which is a lofty goal. But, with how talented both of them are, it is certainly something that is achievable.
