The Green Bay Packers are bringing wide receiver Bo Melton back to the practice squad, a move that closes a brief and expected chapter in the team’s final roster shuffling before the regular season.
According to reporting from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Packers completed the re-signing on Friday after having released Melton earlier in the day.
Those close to the situation framed the cut as a standard roster-management step rather than a change in the organization’s view of the 27-year-old receiver.
The release was a procedural matter and Melton was expected to return, possibly even in time for Sunday’s opener.
In short, the transaction was less about cutting ties than about creating a temporary opening on the 53-man roster while keeping a familiar piece of the supporting cast close at hand.
Melton’s path to Green Bay has been typical of many late-round and undrafted players who linger on the fringes of an NFL roster. Seattle selected him in the seventh round of the 2022 draft out of Rutgers and signed him to a four-year, $3.8 million rookie contract.
The Seahawks released him before he ever appeared in a regular-season game.
He soon found a home on the Packers’ practice squad, bounced between that unit and the active roster in 2023, and earned three elevations that season before finishing the year on the 53-man roster.
This past offseason the Packers re-signed him as an exclusive-rights free agent after placing him on injured reserve to open 2026 with a knee injury that head coach Matt LaFleur said was not an ACL tear.
In 2025, Melton appeared in all 16 games and produced modest but versatile numbers: four receptions for 107 yards and a touchdown on 13 targets, five carries for 35 yards, four tackles, and 19 kickoff returns for 467 yards at a 24.6-yard average. Those contributions, particularly on special teams, explain why Green Bay has been reluctant to let him drift too far from the building.
With the practice squad now including Melton among its mix of linemen, skill players, and specialists, the Packers retain a receiver who already knows the offense and the special-teams units.
Whether he is promoted immediately or remains a phone call away, the move keeps a known commodity available as the team turns its attention from roster construction to the opening week of the season.
