The Green Bay Packers elevated offensive lineman Mekhi Becton from the practice squad to the active roster on Monday, addressing depth concerns after a difficult Week 7 loss to the Detroit Lions.
General Manager Brian Gutekunst announced the move, which also sent center/guard Jacob Monk to injured reserve.
Becton, a 6-foot-7, 357-pound veteran, joined the Packers’ practice squad on September 28 after beginning the season as a free agent.
The former University of Louisville standout was selected 11th overall by the New York Jets in the 2020 NFL Draft with the expectation he would anchor the left tackle spot.
He started 14 games as a rookie before a serious knee injury derailed his 2021 season and limited him again in 2022. The Jets never fully committed long-term, declining his fifth-year option.
Philadelphia signed him in free agency ahead of the 2024 season and shifted him to right guard. The change proved successful; Becton started and contributed to the Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX victory, helping clear paths for Saquon Barkley’s record-setting rushing season.
The following year he signed with the Los Angeles Chargers, but injuries and inconsistent play limited his impact. The Chargers released him in March 2026 after one season of a two-year deal.
Becton has appeared in 61 regular-season games with 59 starts, plus five postseason starts, and has experience at both guard and tackle.
Green Bay gave him roughly four weeks on the practice squad to learn the offense and regain conditioning after offseason shoulder surgery.
Monday’s promotion gives the Packers another large body who can play inside or outside as they navigate injuries.
The timing is notable. Green Bay’s offensive line struggled against Detroit, with right guard Travis Glover allowing multiple pressures in a game the Packers lost despite facing one of the league’s weaker defenses.
Monk, who opened the season as the starter at right guard before being replaced, is now sidelined. Other interior options have also dealt with health issues, forcing the team to use depth pieces at center and elsewhere.
Becton’s arrival raises the question of whether he will simply provide insurance or compete for snaps. Veteran Kevin Zeitler has also been available on the active roster during the same period.
Either player would represent a different look than Glover at right guard as the Packers prepare for Week 8.
With Monk out and the line already thin, Becton is expected to be in the mix as Green Bay tries to stabilize the unit that has been a recurring concern early in the season.
