The Green Bay Packers shuffled their practice squad at wide receiver Tuesday, releasing Chris Hilton Jr. and adding Quincy Skinner Jr. ahead of Sunday’s Week 2 game against the New York Jets.
The move came after the team worked out a handful of receivers, including Nick Nash and Bryce Oliver, before settling on Skinner.
Hilton had been on the practice squad since early August after spending the preseason with Green Bay. The Packers did not keep him long once they identified another option.
Skinner, a second-year undrafted player, becomes the third NFL organization he has been with this season. He began his professional career with the Atlanta Falcons after going undrafted in 2025, spent time on their practice squad, and later joined the Jets for training camp.
The Jets released him after the preseason. Green Bay signed him shortly after opening a practice-squad spot by cutting Hilton.
Skinner played four seasons at Vanderbilt. He recorded 66 receptions for 809 yards and eight touchdowns over his final three college seasons. As a senior in 2024 he caught 29 passes for 367 yards and three scores.
He saw limited action as a freshman and posted 238 yards as a sophomore before adding 204 yards the following year. Those numbers were not enough to generate significant draft interest.
With the Falcons last year he caught three passes for 29 yards in the preseason. This summer with the Jets he had six receptions for 78 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown against Pittsburgh.
The Packers already carry considerable depth at receiver. Their active roster features Christian Watson, Matthew Golden and Jayden Reed as the primary options, plus Skyy Moore and Bo Melton. Rookie J. Michael Sturdivant remains available for special teams.
Savion Williams is on injured reserve with a high-ankle sprain and is expected to miss at least the first four games. General manager Brian Gutekunst indicated Williams should be ready once the mandatory IR period ends.
The team also has Isaiah Neyor on the practice squad. Neyor has more time in the organization than either Hilton or Skinner. Skinner is unlikely to be elevated unless multiple injuries strike the position.
Green Bay also added defensive tackle Eric Johnson to the practice squad around the same time. Johnson, a 2022 fifth-round pick by Indianapolis, has appeared in 51 career games and logged 700 defensive snaps plus 132 on special teams.
On the injury front, defensive tackle Warren Brinson missed Wednesday’s practice with a calf injury suffered in the preseason. Guard Aaron Banks, inactive in Week 1 because of knee tendinitis, returned to work with the offensive line.
Practice squad running back Pierre Strong, who sat out last week with a hamstring issue, was back at practice. Linebacker Collin Oliver remains on injured reserve after an Achilles injury.
The Packers entered the week with open practice-squad spots after promoting Bo Melton and releasing long snapper Scott Daly. They still have room for one more addition.
Skinner’s familiarity with the Jets offense could prove useful this week, though his immediate role is expected to stay on the practice squad. The Packers appear to view him as an upgrade over Hilton at a position where they already have numbers.
Green Bay is 0-1 after dropping its opener and now prepares to face New York on the road. The latest roster tweak reflects an effort to improve depth without disrupting the 53-man group.
Williams’ return later this month will force another decision on whether to keep seven receivers or make a corresponding move. For now the focus remains on getting healthy and tightening the practice squad as the regular season continues.
