There is no guarantee that safety Darnell Savage will return to the Green Bay Packers for the 2024 NFL season.
After the Packers suffered a loss in the NFC divisional round against the San Francisco 49ers, Savage seemed inclined to explore opportunities elsewhere, adding to the uncertainty surrounding Green Bay’s secondary.
To compound matters, there are ongoing speculations about the potential departure of Jaire Alexander from the team in the upcoming offseason.
Aaron Schatz, an ESPN analyst, has made a bold prediction for the Green Bay Packers in free agency. He suggests that the team might address the potential loss of Darnell Savage by acquiring a new safety, while dropping two potential names.
“The Packers will allow Savage to leave in free agency, replacing him with another veteran free agent safety such as Jordan Whitehead or C.J. Gardner-Johnson.”
Gardner-Johnson’s journey in the NFL has seen some twists and turns. In 2022, he was traded by the New Orleans Saints to the Philadelphia Eagles before signing a one-year contract with the Lions in March of 2023, valued at $6.5 million.
Although Gardner-Johnson’s 2023 NFL regular season was marred by injuries, he managed to make a significant impact during the Lions’ three playoff games, including a memorable interception against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the divisional round.
The level of interest in Gardner-Johnson from other teams remains uncertain at this point. Drafted as a fourth-round pick by the Saints in the 2019 NFL Draft, he represents a potential and somewhat intriguing addition for the Green Bay Packers, should they decide to take the gamble.
