Green Bay Packers edge rusher Micah Parsons is drawing fresh optimism that he could be back on the field sooner than many expected after reconstructive knee surgery, possibly in time for a nationally televised reunion with the Dallas Cowboys.
NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero said Wednesday there is optimism Parsons can make his 2026 debut in Week 6 against Dallas and potentially even one week earlier against the Chicago Bears.
That timeline would put the All-Pro pass rusher at the front of the window the Packers have discussed since last winter.
Green Bay placed Parsons on the reserve/physically unable to perform list when it set its initial 53-man roster. The designation requires him to miss at least the first four games of the regular season.
The Bears visit Lambeau Field on Oct. 11 in Week 5, which is the earliest Parsons is eligible to return. The Cowboys then arrive seven days later for a Sunday night game on Oct. 18.
Parsons tore the ACL in his left knee and damaged the meniscus late last season. He was injured Dec. 14 against the Denver Broncos while chasing quarterback Bo Nix and underwent surgery on Dec. 29.
The combination of procedures lengthened his rehabilitation compared with a standard ACL recovery. He spent seven weeks on crutches to protect the repaired meniscus, a detail he has used to explain why his timeline differed from teammates who returned more quickly from similar injuries.
In August, Parsons said the Week 6 game against Dallas felt like a realistic target.
“Yeah, I think it’s very realistic,” Parsons told Packers.com. “Me and the staff, we’ve got to put the work in.”
A Week 5 appearance would give him a chance to shake off rust in a familiar NFC North setting before facing the team that traded him. Waiting until Week 6 would mean his first snap since the injury comes directly against his former club.
Dallas sent Parsons to Green Bay before the 2025 season in exchange for two first-round draft picks and defensive tackle Kenny Clark. Immediately after the deal, Parsons signed a four-year, $188 million contract that included $136 million guaranteed.
He delivered on that investment in his first season with the Packers. In 14 games he recorded 12.5 sacks, becoming the first player since sacks became an official statistic in 1982 to post at least 12 sacks in each of his first five NFL seasons. His career total through five years stands at 65 sacks.
Green Bay was 9-3-1 when Parsons went down. The Packers did not win another game the rest of the season.
Parsons has spent the months since the injury focused on returning as the same disruptive force. He has also made clear that the long layoff has built up emotion he plans to release on the field.
“The anger, the frustration, the things that I’m going to have to let out because of how long it’s been since I played … that’s what people should really worry about,” Parsons said in August.
The Packers still have several weeks before they must decide whether to activate him. Tuesday’s report from Pelissero, however, suggests the wait could end as early as the Bears game, with the Cowboys matchup following close behind.
Parsons has described the daily grind at Lambeau Field as starting early and including treatment, running, meetings and film work. He has said the work is the only way to control the outcome of a recovery that has already taken most of a calendar year.
If he is cleared for Week 5 or Week 6, Green Bay would regain the player who generated the highest share of the team’s pressures last season and consistently collapsed pockets even when offenses committed extra blockers to him.
The coming weeks will determine whether that return lands against Chicago, against Dallas, or a little later. For now, the latest update has the Packers believing their most important defensive player is tracking toward the early part of the window they outlined months ago.
