The biggest storyline for the Green Bay Packers over the last few weeks has been the contract situation of quarterback Jordan Love. After agreeing to a small extension during the 2023 offseason, he is up for a new deal again this offseason.

Last year, the deal was signed as a safeguard for the Packers. Essentially, they erased the fifth-year option on his deal.

While it saved Green Bay money in the short term, it was also a way for Jordan Love to bet on himself. It was the smart decision, as he has put himself in line for a gigantic raise.

To this point, no deal has come to fruition. The Packers were optimistic that a deal would get done ahead of training camp earlier this offseason, as that was a soft deadline.

That deadline has come and no deal has been in place. Jordan Love didn’t hold out, but until an extension is agreed to, we won’t see him on the practice field or in preseason games.

“We completely understand where he’s coming from,” Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said.

It was encouraging to see Love report on time, helping the team avoid one distraction. But, the only thing people are going to talk about is his contract until something gets done.

During the offseason, the Utah State product was there every step of the way. He participated in OTAs and mandatory minicamp, cashing in on a $500,000 bonus.

Looking to get the deal over the finish line, Gutekunst expressed some optimism something would be done sooner rather than later. “Yeah, I think so, but again, you never know. We’re working really hard to get that done. At the same time, the thing I have confidence in is we both want the same thing.”

Despite Love not taking part in practice, there are currently no plans to add another quarterback to the roster. Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt will take all the reps as they battle it out for the No. 2 job.

If another arm is needed, former NFL quarterback Sean Mannion, who was hired as an assistant coach on the staff, will throw passes.
