The Green Bay Packers find themselves in search of a new defensive coordinator, following head coach Matt LaFleur’s decision to part ways with Joe Barry after three lackluster seasons.
While it’s only been a mere two days since the announcement of Barry’s departure, the team has been relatively tight-lipped about potential candidates.
One prominent figure in the mix is former Los Angeles Chargers head coach and ex-Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator, Brandon Staley, who has been reported to be interviewing for the role.
Among the passionate Packers fan base, there’s a growing desire to see either former Wisconsin Badgers defensive coordinator, Jim Leonhard, or the current Dallas Cowboys defensive backs coach, Al Harris, take the helm.
However, the Packers have not officially disclosed the names of their interviewees as of yet. The only reason the public is aware of the Brandon Staley interview is due to a leak, with ESPN’s Diana Russini and The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman providing the inside scoop.
Interestingly, there are bound to be other potential candidates on the radar. According to NFL insider Dan Graziano of ESPN, Chris Harris is indeed on the Packers’ shortlist of candidates. This revelation adds an intriguing dimension to the search for the next defensive coordinator.
“On the defensive coordinator front, Titans DBs coach Chris Harris is getting an interview in Chicago, and I’m told he’s on Green Bay’s list as well. The Packers job might be more appealing, since coach Matt Eberflus seems likely to keep calling the defensive plays in Chicago, but the point is Harris is a relatively hot name and could have options.”
What sets the Packers apart from some other teams in their hunt for a defensive coordinator is their unique situation regarding play-calling.
Green Bay’s head coach, Matt LaFleur, is renowned for his offensive expertise and personally handles offensive play-calling duties. Consequently, whoever assumes the role of defensive coordinator will have more autonomy when it comes to devising defensive strategies and calling plays—an appealing prospect for any prospective candidate.
Make sure to stay tuned, as more news about the Packers’ defensive coordinator search is sure to break in the very near future.
