The Green Bay Packers signed wide receiver Coleman Owen to the practice squad Tuesday after a workout, adding depth at a position thinned by injuries early in the 2026 season.
Packers writer Wendell Ferreira reported the move, writing, “The Packers have signed WR Coleman Owen to the practice squad, via Bill Huber. Owen has already spent some time with the Colts.”
Huber, publisher of Packers On SI, first detailed the signing after Green Bay worked out several players. Owen became available after an injury settlement with Indianapolis earlier this month.
Owen, 25, is a 5-foot-10, 181-pound slot receiver from Gilbert, Arizona. He went undrafted in 2025 after one season at Ohio and five at Northern Arizona.
In 2024 at Ohio, Owen caught 78 passes for 1,245 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging 16.0 yards per reception. He posted seven 100-yard games, including 10 catches for 137 yards against Syracuse, and earned first-team All-MAC honors.
He also returned punts, including a 61-yarder, and scored 10 total touchdowns that season. Before transferring, Owen spent five seasons at Northern Arizona after walking on. He scored 18 touchdowns for the Lumberjacks, including an 85-yard punt return.
Before the 2025 draft, Owen ran a 4.53-second 40-yard dash and posted a 36-inch vertical at his pro day. Evaluators viewed him as a quick-twitch slot target with yards-after-catch ability more than a true outside receiver.
The Colts signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2025. He did not make the initial 53-man roster but spent most of the year on the practice squad. Indianapolis elevated him twice late in the season.
Owen appeared in two games, playing 20 snaps, nearly all on special teams. He returned five kickoffs for 141 yards, a 28.2-yard average, and one punt for two yards. He had one offensive target and no receptions.
This preseason, Owen suffered a concussion and was placed on injured reserve. The Colts waived him with an injury settlement in early September, clearing him to sign elsewhere once he passed protocol.
Green Bay has been searching for receiver help. Jayden Reed left the Week 2 win at the New York Jets on a stretcher with a neck injury and has not played since. Coach Matt LaFleur said this week it remains too early to know whether Reed will return this season.
Third-round pick Savion Williams remains on injured reserve with an ankle injury. That has left Christian Watson and 2025 first-rounder Matthew Golden as the primary healthy options, with Bo Melton and others filling in.
The Packers are 1-2 heading into Sunday’s game at Tampa Bay. Practice squad receivers can be elevated up to three times, giving Owen a path onto the active roster if injuries persist.
Owen has described himself as a versatile contributor. At his pro day he said he would return punts and kicks and play gunner if asked, adding that he was “just the guy who’s going to come in, put his head down, and make that 53 doing whatever, whatever he can.”
The signing does not guarantee game-day snaps. It does give Green Bay another experienced slot body for practice and a potential special-teams option as the roster continues to shift through the first month of the season.
