The Green Bay Packers came away with two wide receivers during the 2022 NFL Draft. In the second round, they selected Christian Watson out of South Dakota State and in the fourth round, they selected Romeo Doubs out of Nevada.
Throughout the offseason, it was Watson who was drawing all of the attention and headlines. He was expected to take on a large role in the offense with Davante Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling departing via trade and free agency. But, Watson didn’t begin to make his impact until later on in the season.
It was actually Romeo Doubs who made his presence felt early on in the season. While Watson struggled with some bumps and bruises and untimely drops, it was the Nevada product who was building a rapport with Aaron Rodgers.
Unfortunately for Romeo Doubs, injuries would eventually derail what was a promising rookie season. He ended up playing in 13 games, catching 42 passes for 425 yards and three touchdowns. Certainly not too shabby for a fourth-round rookie who was overshadowed by a draft mate in the early going.
Heading into Year 2, there are now some expectations of Romeo Doubs and Watson. Shockingly, they are the most experienced wide receivers on the depth chart currently and will be relied upon as go-to weapons in the passing game.
Thus far, that pressure has not seemed to phase them. In fact, they could be thriving. By all accounts, Romeo Doubs has been the standout of the offseason for the Packers according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.
“While Christian Watson got most of the attention for his big plays late last season, Doubs has seemingly become quarterback Jordan Love’s go-to guy — at least in the offseason practices. Whether it’s in scripted team periods or move-the-ball drills like the two-minute simulation, Doubs has been targeted time and again. Don’t forget, it was Doubs who starred last preseason when Love got all the No. 1 reps in the games because Aaron Rodgers didn’t play. And Doubs was off to a strong start last year as a rookie until a midseason ankle injury changed his trajectory.”
While Watson may be the No. 1 on the depth chart, it certainly sounds like Romeo Doubs will be the go-to target for Love. The two have built a strong rapport going back to last offseason and it has carried into 2023, with both projected to have starting roles on the offense.
