Given how much mystery is surrounding the Green Bay Packers heading into the 2023 season, no one knows what to truly expect from the team. There are a lot of inexperienced players that will be in key roles this upcoming season, none with more pressure on them than Jordan Love.
He will be taking over as the starting quarterback, replacing Aaron Rodgers under center. He is surrounded by inexperienced skill position players as well, so it could take some time for things to get rolling on that side of the ball.
Defensively, the Packers have more experience but there are also some glaring holes. The defensive line depth is in question after losing veterans Dean Lowry and Jarran Reed in free agency and not replacing them.
But, Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report has a solution for that; trade for Indianapolis Colts defensive lineman, Grover Stewart. Green Bay struggled mightily against the run last season and it certainly wouldn’t hurt to bolster the pass rusher a little more with Rashan Gary’s status up in the air as he recovers from ACL surgery.
In the final year of his contract and with DeForest Buckner already having a massive long-term extension, it would make sense for the Colts to move Stewart. Green Bay is a logical landing spot.
Another need on the defense is safety. Things were messy there last season and the only additions made this offseason were Jonathan Owens and Tarvarius Moore. A splash such as Budda Baker, as suggested by Ballentine, would be huge for this defense.
The Packers would have one of the best secondaries in the NFL adding Baker alongside cornerbacks Jaire Alexander and Rasul Douglas. A Darnell Savage Jr. bounceback at safety would take them to even higher heights. Armed with the cap space to fit a large contract, Baker would make a lot of sense.
Last but not least, the Packers could look to get back some assets by making Yosuah Nijman available. Offensive line depth has been important in Green Bay the last few seasons with how many injuries have occurred. But, Nijman looks like he could be the odd man out this offseason.
Given his experience and versatility, a relatively strong market could grow. Playing out 2023 on a restricted free agent tender, it would make sense for the Packers to get something of value for him now than potentially lose him for nothing in free agency next year.
