The Green Bay Packers overhauled the safety position this offseason, signing Xavier McKinney in free agency and selecting Javon Bullard in the NFL Draft.
However, the Packers could still stand to improve their secondary depth, which is why Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay is urging Green Bay to swing a trade for Washington Commanders safety Darrick Forest.
Kay has the Packers sending a seventh-round draft pick to the Commanders in the deal.
Forrest played in just five games last season due to injury, logging 29 tackles.
The 25-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Cincinnati, was selected by Washington in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
He appeared in eight contests during his rookie campaign, recording seven tackles. Then, the following year, Forrest won a starting job and participated in every game, finishing with 88 tackles, four interceptions, a couple of forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and nine passes defended in an impressive season.
However, with the Commanders having Jeremy Chinn and second-year player Quan Martin at safety, Forrest could be viewed as expendable.
For the Packers, surrendering a seventh-round pick would obviously not represent a gamble at all. If they land Forrest and he works out, great. If not, then they gave up a draft pick that was probably never going to turn into anything anyway.
Of course, whether or not Washington would let Forrest go for a seventh-rounder is debatable, even with the importance of safeties diminishing in the modern game.
The Packers are coming off of a surprising 2023 campaign in which they won nine games and snared a Wild Card berth in the NFC playoffs after going 6-2 over their final eight contests.
Green Bay then went on to upset the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card Round and even took a lead into the fourth quarter against the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round before ultimately losing.
With Jordan Love under center, the Packers are widely viewed as dark horse Super Bowl contenders heading into 2024.
That being said, Green Bay is playing in a very tough NFC North division and in an improved conference in general. Plus, the Packers do have plenty of question marks that need to be addressed. Again, their secondary depth is one of them.
We’ll see if the Green Bay Packers make another move before the start of the regular season and if Forrest ends up on their radar.
