The Green Bay Packers unveiled their 2026 team captains on Monday, and the list immediately raised eyebrows among fans who follow the locker room as closely as the box score.
Quarterback Jordan Love, tight end Tucker Kraft, linebacker Isaiah McDuffie and safety Xavier McKinney all return as captains from last season. Newcomer Zaire Franklin, acquired from Indianapolis in the offseason, joins them.
Conspicuously missing from that group is Micah Parsons.
Parsons arrived in Green Bay as the defense’s most explosive player and a Defensive Player of the Year candidate before tearing his ACL in Week 15 of 2025. He still finished with 12.5 sacks, 41 tackles and two forced fumbles.
The 27-year-old is currently on the physically unable to perform list and is expected to miss at least the first four games, though the organization has not suggested a lengthy absence beyond that window. Even so, the Packers chose not to give him the C on his jersey.
Team captains are not always the most statistically dominant players. They are often the ones coaches trust to set the tone in meetings, on special teams and during the long grind of a season. McDuffie earned his spot largely through more than 1,000 career special-teams snaps.
Franklin, despite being new to the building, brings four straight seasons of 100-plus tackles and a reputation as a tone-setter. Love and Kraft have already worn the title. Parsons, by contrast, is still relatively new to the franchise after his midseason arrival last year and has spent the offseason rehabbing rather than leading everyday practices.
That context helps explain the decision, but it does not fully erase the surprise. Parsons is the player whose return most directly affects Green Bay’s Super Bowl ceiling.
Leaving him off the captain list while naming a recently acquired linebacker and a special-teams staple sends a message that availability and institutional familiarity still matter more than raw talent in this particular vote.
The Packers had seven captains a year ago. Running back Josh Jacobs is on the commissioner-exempt list, and both Quay Walker and Rashan Gary are gone.
The group has been trimmed and reshuffled. Whether Parsons eventually joins that group once he is fully healthy remains an open question.
For now, the official captains are Love, Kraft, Franklin, McDuffie and McKinney. The most talented defender on the roster will have to lead without the title.
