One of the Green Bay Packers storylines that people will be paying attention to for the remainder of the offseason revolves around quarterback Jordan Love. Entrenched as the team’s starter after a successful first season in the role, what will his next contract look like?

The two sides agreed to an amended deal during the 2023 season, essentially erasing the fifth-year option on Jordan Love’s rookie contract. It was a safeguard for the Packers, who didn’t know what they had yet in the 2020 first-round pick out of Utah State.

It turns out, they have a very talented quarterback. Jordan Love was excellent in 2023 and should be their starter moving forward. But, negotiations on his contract extension are tricky, especially when taking into account the contracts his peers are agreeing to.

While the two sides are negotiating, NFL insider Adam Schefter of ESPN didn’t have the most encouraging update to share on the situation. According to Schefter, who made an appearance on the Jen, Gabe and Chewy Show in Milwaukee, a deal isn’t close between them.

In Schefter’s opinion, the record-setting deal that the Detroit Lions agreed to with their quarterback, Jared Goff, is the baseline for negotiations for the Green Bay Packers and Jordan Love. His four-year, $212 million extension is the largest in Lions history and gives him the second-highest annual average behind Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals.

“I think his number would go above it, and that is if a deal gets done. The longer the Packers wait, the more difficult it will be for them and the better it will be for Jordan Love. That’s my own opinion,” Schefter said. “I would come to Jordan Love with a strong cash offer, a lot of guaranteed money, it’s easy for me to say. The average, let’s say, $51 million, $52 million. Do you think that number is going down any after Jared Goff’s average comes into $53 million? I’m gonna have to see the structure, but I guess he’s not gonna take less than Jared Goff. Now, there are potential deals there for Trevor Lawrence, maybe Matthew Stafford, Tua Tagovailoa if that deal gets done, Dak Prescott is still out there. The numbers on these deals don’t go down, they just don’t.” (H/T A to Z Sports)

Given how inexperienced and youthful the rest of the Green Bay Packers are, they can afford a lucrative contract extension for Jordan Love. There is certainly some risk to giving him a big long-term deal after only one season as the starter, but he looked great in Year 1 and expectations for the team are on the rise.
