The Green Bay Packers made one major trade with the New York Jets this offseason. They traded quarterback Aaron Rodgers to New York, which has kick-started the Jordan Love era in Green Bay.
That trade has sent each franchise on a different path heading into the 2023 season. While the Packers are in a bit of a reset year and not expected to contend, the Jets are on the other end of the spectrum. They are expected to be Super Bowl contenders by many people with their quarterback upgrade.
While adding Rodgers will be a huge improvement for the Jets, there are still a few holes on the roster. The offensive line is a bit shaky and will be the determining factor in how much success the offense can find.
As a result, one ESPN analyst, Mike Greenberg, who is a huge Jets fan, believes his team should make another deal with the Packers to bolster their unit in the trenches. This time, it would be left tackle David Bakhtiari that they look to acquire.
“Dianna’s not reporting it’s happening, I’m reporting they should do it,” Greenberg started. “The Jets should go out and make a trade for offensive line help immediately, and David Bakhtiari would be the perfect place to start.” (H/T MSN)
The concerns that Greenberg has about the offensive line came about after the team struggled mightily in their joint practice with the Packers’ NFC North rivals, the Detroit Lions. If the Jets cannot keep Rodgers upright in the pocket this season, all of their hopes and aspirations will go out the window.
While Bakhtiari would certainly be an upgrade at left tackle, he has some injury concerns of his own. It would be a huge risk acquiring him and counting on him to remain healthy for the entire season.
The Packers aren’t going to just give Bakhtiari away, either, so the Jets would have to get creative when discussing trade compensation. Removing the protection on the 2024 draft pick already heading to Green Bay could be one way to do it.
Guaranteeing that the Packers will receive a first-round pick and adding in a late Day 2 or early Day 3 pick on top could be enough to pique their interest.
