The Green Bay Packers finally added a legitimate backup for quarterback Jordan Love, swinging a trade to acquire Malik Willis from the Tennessee Titans earlier in the week.
Of course, I may be using the term “legitimate” loosely there, as Willis has never thrown a touchdown in 11 appearances and three NFL starts. He has, however, tossed three interceptions.
That’s why Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon is wondering why the Packers didn’t sign a certain veteran quarterback with a whole lot of skin in the game: Ryan Tannehill.
Tannehill is surprisingly still remaining on the free-agent market in spite of the fact that many teams—including Green Bay—have been in need of a backup quarterback.
Sure, Tannehill had a poor season with the Titans in 2024, finishing with four touchdowns and seven picks in 10 games and eight starts.
However, Tannehill is certainly more proven than Willis and would seem to be a much more viable No. 2 option behind Love.
Not only that, but Tannehill could definitely offer Love more tips and mentorship than Willis, who is the same age as Love and has considerably less NFL experience.
Perhaps the Packers like Willis’ potential and view him as a potential trade chip. After all, he is just 25 years old and is a former third-round pick with dual-threat capabilities, so it stands to reason that some other teams around the league would be interested in pursuing him.
But for a Green Bay squad that is attempting to win a Super Bowl right now, you would think it would have seemed more comfortable rolling with a veteran like Tannehill over Willis.
Regardless, the Packers obviously don’t want to run into a situation where they have to go to their backup signal-caller, no matter if it is Tannehill or Willis. If it comes to that, Green Bay will be in some deep trouble.
The Packers went 9-8 last season, going 6-2 over their last eight games to vault themselves into a rather stunning playoff experience. They then went on to upset the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card Round before falling to the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round.
Some view the Green Bay Packers as dark horse Super Bowl contenders heading into 2024, so it will be intriguing to see how the team responds to those lofty expectations.
