A lot of people are going to be keeping an eye on the Green Bay Packers as they head into training camp at the end of the month. A changing of the guard occurred this offseason, as Aaron Rodgers was traded to the New York Jets, opening the door for Jordan Love to take over as the starting quarterback.
Love will be under a lot of pressure attempting to replace a legend of Rodgers’ stature. But, while the quarterback position has garnered the most attention, Love is far from the only uncertainty on the roster.
There isn’t a single wide receiver on the roster with more than one season of NFL experience. The tight position is arguably the least experienced, production-wise, in the league as two rookies could sit atop the depth chart once the regular season rolls around.
Defensively, the team is patiently waiting to see if Rashan Gary will be able to get on the field after tearing his ACL in Week 9 of the 2022 season. The safety position remains a huge weakness as the team did very little to address the needs there.
Put all of that together and it should come as no surprise that the Packers are near the bottom of the pre-training camp power rankings. Just how low are they? Natalie Miller of Touchdown Wire has the Packers ranked 25th heading into camp.
“The Jordan Love era is off to the races, and it is a fair question to ask if he can bring even a small percentage of what Aaron Rodgers brought to the table at the position. The team around Love is solid, but he is just such a massive unknown, it is tough to project success for the team as a whole.”
Head coach Matt LaFleur will certainly have his hands full this season given the youthfulness of the roster. Some people see that as a good thing as he will now have an opportunity to showcase what he can really do without Rodgers in the lineup.
Rodgers was here well before LaFleur and pushed back against some of the concepts and schemes that were being implemented offensively. Without him, we can see the full expanse of what LaFleur and his staff wanted for the team offensively.
There will certainly be some bumps in the road with so many inexperienced players, but the Packers’ strengths are in the best spots to help carry a young quarterback. They have a great offensive line and the best running back duo in the NFL to lean on. If the defense plays up to its potential, Green Bay will surprise some people this season.
