Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jayden Reed has feeling and movement in all extremities after leaving Sunday’s game against the New York Jets with a neck injury, the team said.
Reed will stay overnight for further testing and observation rather than travel home with the club.
The Packers posted the update after their 20-17 overtime win at MetLife Stadium.
Reed went down on the second play from scrimmage. He caught a short swing pass from Jordan Love for a four-yard gain and was hit high by Jets linebacker Demario Davis. Kingsley Enagbare also appeared to make contact.
Reed crumpled to the turf, stayed down for several minutes and was placed on a stabilizing backboard. Trainers strapped his helmet in place before loading him onto a cart.
Players from both teams took a knee. The entire Packers sideline came onto the field, and many teammates knelt nearby as medical staff worked.
Green Bay immediately ruled Reed out with a neck injury. On the next snap, right tackle Zach Bako-Bewele went down with a right knee injury. His leg was placed in a cast and he was also carted off. The Packers ruled him out as well.
Coach Matt LaFleur called the scene with Reed frightening.
“J Reed is doing OK. He has movement in all his extremities. That’s a scary moment,” LaFleur said.
The official team statement read: “Update: WR Jayden Reed has feeling and movement in all extremities. He will stay overnight for further testing and observation.”
Reed, 26, is in his fourth season after Green Bay selected him in the second round of the 2023 draft out of Michigan State. The Packers signed him to a three-year extension worth about $50 million this past offseason.
Last year he missed 10 games after breaking his collarbone in Week 2 against Washington. He also had surgery on a Jones fracture in his foot.
This is the second straight season Reed has been hurt in the second game.
Green Bay already is without running back Josh Jacobs. The Packers also lost guard Aaron Banks and guard Donovan Jennings during Sunday’s contest.
The offense sputtered for much of the afternoon, finishing with just 199 total yards and converting one of nine third downs. Love completed 16 of 29 passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns.
Rookie kicker Trey Smack made a 26-yard field goal with 5:23 left in overtime to snap a six-game losing streak for Green Bay.
LaFleur sounded more concerned about Bako-Bewele’s knee.
“That doesn’t look good. That could be a season-ender potentially,” he said.
Reed’s availability beyond this weekend remains unclear. The team has not given a timetable.
Christian Watson, Matthew Golden and tight end Tucker Kraft are expected to handle more of the receiving load if Reed is sidelined for any length of time.
The Packers return home next week after evening their record at 1-1.
