Heading into training camp at the end of July, there are a few positional groups for the Green Bay Packers that people will be keeping an eye on. Arguably their strongest group is their pass rushers. One player looking to make a name for himself is Brenton Cox Jr.
Leading the way off the edge is veteran Preston Smith. Rashan Gary is the rising star of the group, receiving a lucrative extension from the Green Bay Packers last season. Rounding out the top three is 2023 first-round pick Lukas Van Ness, who came on at the end of his rookie campaign.
That is a strong top three for the Green Bay Packers to rely on, but it is their depth that makes this group so strong. Behind them are Kingsley Enagbare and Brenton Cox Jr., who could see more opportunities this season.
Brenton Cox Jr. went undrafted in 2023 and made the Green Bay Packers after a strong offseason. There is no denying the skill and talent he possesses, but he had issues staying out of trouble collegiately.
In 46 games between Georgia and Florida, he racked up 34 tackles for loss and 15 sacks. He can get into the opposing backfield and create some havoc, making plays rushing the quarterback or stuffing the run.
Heading into training camp in 2024, Brenton Cox Jr. is one player that Paul Bretl of Packers Wire believes could break out. During the offseason program, he has already had a few highlight plays stand out.
“Brenton Cox put together a strong showing during offseason programs, particularly during the two-day minicamp. In one of those practices, he had two really nice pass rush reps against Jordan Morgan and Andre Dillard, where he used his power to get each tackle off-balanced and then made his way to the quarterback. Cox’s power pass rush moves will look even better once the pads come on and he can use that ability to its full effect,” Bretl wrote.
The Green Bay Packers aren’t going to rely on Brenton Cox Jr. to be a starter in 2024, but pass rushing depth is always important. Teams can never have enough and he could push for at least a rotational role coming off the edge.
Having a go-to move already in his arsenal, it will interesting to see Brenton Cox Jr. when guys can go 100 percent in training camp. His roster spot is not guaranteed, but picking up where he left off in the minicamp would certainly strengthen his hold on a spot.
