The Green Bay Packers had a dominating performance against the Cincinnati Bengals in their first preseason game of the year. Green Bay won the game 36-19 and came away feeling very good about multiple aspects of the team.
The Packers played a number of their starters for multiple series in the game and the results were mostly positive. All eyes were on quarterback Jordan Love, who played the first two series of the game.
The first series stalled out after five plays, but the second one was much more successful. Love led the team on a touchdown drive, hitting Romeo Doubs for a nine-yard score to cap it off. That was the end of his evening, as the Utah State product finished the game 7-of-10 for 46 yards and the score.
A lot of Packers fans had to come away feeling good about what they saw out of Love. He was able to lead the offense to a touchdown and didn’t make any mistakes during his time on the field. However, not everyone was impressed by his performance.
One person who wasn’t was radio host Colin Cowherd. During a recent episode of his show, The Heard, on FS1 and Fox Sports, Cowherd shared some harsh criticisms of Love. In his opinion, Love isn’t going to be someone that elevates the team.
“He’s a game manager. There’s no special there,” Cowherd said as he wasn’t wowed during Love’s preseason debut.
Making a declaration like that after two series in the preseason is certainly a bold comment by Cowherd. While a majority of the Packers’ starters were on the field with him for those two series, some key members did sit the game out.
In the preseason, teams are using vanilla game plans as well, as they don’t want to give anything away that could be used in the regular season. It will be interesting to see what Love is capable of once the regular season rolls around as the Packers will be opening up their entire playbook for the first time under Matt LaFleur.
