The Green Bay Packers have every reason to be excited about their future following the 2023 season.

Much has been discussed regarding the Packers’ youthful roster, which managed to advance to the divisional round of the playoffs at a remarkably young age. In what was initially considered a rebuilding season, the Packers came tantalizingly close to reaching the conference championship, falling just three points short.

Now, the Packers face the task of building upon their promising foundation. This may involve making strategic moves to create cap space for potential free agency acquisitions, with the aim of strengthening the team’s longevity.

According to a recent report, the Packers could potentially clear $27 million in cap space over the next three seasons through a single, seemingly likely move.

With only $8 million available for free agency signings, the Packers not only need room for incoming talent but also to retain their current roster of players.

Ken Ingalls has outlined a series of moves that Green Bay should consider in the coming weeks, including a category labeled “goodbye.” Among the names in this category are David Bakhtiari and De’Vondre Campbell.

De’Vondre Campbell, in his inaugural year with Green Bay, earned All-Pro status as an inside linebacker. While Campbell has made significant contributions during his tenure with the Packers, injuries have hampered his recent performance and productivity. Consequently, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if the Packers decide to part ways with Campbell during this off-season.

As per current projections, De’Vondre Campbell is expected to carry a cap hit of $14.407 million in 2024, with $11.628 million in dead money if he is released. However, the financial considerations extend beyond simply cutting a player due to less than $3 million in savings.

If the Packers choose to release Campbell in 2024, they would also free up an additional $12.532 million in cap space over the following two years. This represents a substantial difference, amounting to over $27 million in savings over the next three seasons.

If Green Bay is confident in their future at the inside linebacker position, this move could become an obvious and financially prudent decision.
