The Green Bay Packers are going to be relying on some very young players at the skill positions to elevate the offense in 2023. One of the players who they are most excited about is second-year wide receiver, Romeo Doubs.
Doubs got off to a hot start during his rookie season, quickly ascending the depth chart while fellow rookie wide receiver Christian Watson was still finding his way. He received at least five targets in six out of the first eight games of the season as he was a big part of the Packers’ aerial attack.
Unfortunately for Doubs, he suffered an injury in Week 9 that killed all of his momentum. He ended up playing one play in that game against the Detroit Lions before missing the next four games.
Upon his return, Doubs was once again a big part of the team’s offense, receiving 17 targets to end the season. That was a big target share when taking into account that his offensive snaps were cut drastically from where he was earlier in the season.
Heading into 2023, Doubs is set for a major role in the Packers’ offense. With Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb moving on, he is set up to be a top-two option in the passing offense. Head coach Matt LaFleur recently spoke about Doubs and believes the Nevada product is ready to break out.
“I think that ‘Rome’ has done a nice job of really making that next step. Now, he’s got to go out and do it in games, what we’ve seen from him in practice, just how deliberate he is with what he’s trying to work on. He’s done a great job of really getting his feet in the ground, running violent routes, violent cuts, being aggressive with his hands. I think he’s shown a lot of progress. Just the rapport that those two guys have shown throughout eight practices has been pretty solid.”
Not only is the coaching staff getting more comfortable with Doubs, but his starting quarterback, Jordan Love, is also. According to reports from Packers camp, it was Doubs, not Watson, who was becoming the go-to receiver for Love.
Things are certainly trending in the right direction for Doubs, who was also picked as a deep sleeper for Fantasy Football heading into training camp. Given his blend of size and athleticism and the opportunity that lies ahead of him, 2023 is setting up to be a breakout campaign for Doubs.
