There is a lot to get excited about when it comes to the Green Bay Packers in the 2023 season. While it is hard to predict how well the team may perform this upcoming season, a lot of that will depend on how the younger players on the roster develop.
One of the players that people will be keeping an eye on is wide receiver Romeo Doubs. Entering Year 2 of his professional career, Doubs is in line for a big role in the Packers’ offense with Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb departing in free agency.
He is expected to take over a top-two role in the passing game along with fellow 2022 draft pick, Christian Watson. With no veteran receivers signed this offseason, they are going to be atop the pecking order for targets in 2023.
That is a big reason why David Kenyon of Bleacher Report selected Doubs as one of his seven wide receiver breakout candidates for the 2023 season. For a player to break out the combination of opportunity and skill needs to be present and the Nevada product has both in spades.
Last year, Doubs played very well in the preseason and he parlayed that into a regular role with the offense during the regular season. A midseason injury that cost him four games was the only hiccup in what was otherwise a very strong rookie campaign.
Doubs finished the 2022 season with 42 catches for 425 yards and one touchdown, playing 62 percent of the snaps. Given how differently the Packers’ depth chart looked last season with Lazard, Cobb and Sammy Watkins being present, playing that amount of snaps as a rookie was quite an achievement.
In 2023, that number should only increase. He and Watson are the only players that look locked into roles in the Packers’ passing game and Doubs is already emerging as the go-to target for Jordan Love as a standout during this offseason.
