As the Green Bay Packers prepare for training camp at the end of July, there are a few orders of business remaining to take care of. To the surprise of no one, the Packers have sat out of free agency almost entirely, but that is something that could change in the coming weeks.
A lot of factors played into the quiet offseason, with the Aaron Rodgers trade being the biggest one. But, with that now behind them, the franchise can focus on the players who are here and the season that is ahead.
Speaking of the quarterback position, the Packers are 100 percent committed to Jordan Love being the starter. He has gotten all the first-team reps, but the team has taken a major risk with the depth that is behind him.
Battling it out for the backup quarterback spot will be Danny Etling and Sean Clifford. Etling was a seventh-round pick out of LSU in the 2018 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. Sean Clifford was selected in the fifth round this year, meaning there is virtually zero NFL regular season experience on this roster.
Love has one career start and 10 appearances, throwing 83 passes in three seasons. Etling has never thrown a regular season pass and Clifford is in the same boat. That is a major reason why Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report suggested one veteran that the Packers should bring in is Teddy Bridgewater.
As things currently stand, the Packers have no contingency plan should Love be forced out of the lineup for whatever reason. It would be tough to envision Etling or Clifford leading them to any success, but Bridgewater would certainly be able to keep the team afloat.
Unlike Carson Wentz, who has been connected to the Packers at times this offseason, Bridgewater has experience as a backup. He would be the perfect mentor behind Love as someone that can not only show him the ropes but knows what being QB2 entails.
While Bridgewater had issues staying healthy last season in relief of Tua Tagovailoa, bringing him on would be a worthwhile addition for Green Bay. It would be shocking if the Packers went into the regular season with this current trio as their depth chart.
