Matt LaFleur and the Green Bay Packers are preparing to open up training camp, but the status of MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers is unknown. Rodgers wants to leave the Packers, but the team does not seem interested in trading him. That leaves Green Bay with Jordan Love, Blake Bortles, and Kurt Benkert as their top three quarterbacks on the roster.

Benkert is the only name that fans don’t know much about. He is a second-year quarterback out of Virginia with no playing experience in the NFL.

Well, even though he doesn’t have much experience and he is a relatively unknown name, Benkert has been turning some heads during offseason practices. LaFleur took some time to talk about Benkert and what he has seen from the young signal caller.

“He can really throw the football. But it’s going to come down to being able to do that in the preseason games and show us what he can do…We love the guy, he’s a sponge and asks great questions.”

Those are some very glowing comments from an NFL head coach. While the comments definitely don’t guarantee Benkert a spot on the roster, the Packers and Matt LaFleur obviously have liked what they see from him. If he can perform well in the preseason, there is a good chance that he could at least earn a practice squad spot with Green Bay.

On the other hand, if the Packers are not able to fix things with Rodgers, they could keep three quarterbacks on the active roster. No one knows what to expect from Love and Bortles simply isn’t an ideal starting option. Benkert likely won’t play this season, but he could be making a name for himself for future purposes.

During the 2017 college football season with Virgnia, Benkert put up good numbers. He racked up 3,207 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He doesn’t have star potential, but he could work his way into being a serviceable backup for either the Packers or another NFL team.

Expect to continue hearing about the quarterbacks in Green Bay until the situation with Rodgers is figured out. If the MVP doesn’t return to the Packers, a guy like Kurt Benkert could find his way to some snaps if the players above him on the depth chart struggle or if the injury bug bites.
